My best friend has just gone through this, caring for both of his elderly parents. His mother and father passed within 6 months of each other, but he had been caring for them for years.

One thing we did to mitigate his stress levels was to go on weekly Sunday bike rides. It gave him a chance to get out of the house and something to look forward to every week. Finding a physical hobby, such a cycling, is so good for stress relief.
