How actually get a free credit report:
Many people think that they ordered a "free" credit report, to only learn later that they had also signed up for other costly services, which were bundled with their so-called free report. One of the sources often cited for misleading offers is FreeCreditReport.com, which advertises in many places, including popular television ads. Much later, many people are finding out that in addition to their credit report, they had unknowingly signed up for a monthly credit monitoring service, which often costs about $15 per month until cancelled. These sites are often reported to be unnecessary and overpriced. Yes, the credit report that you obtain from them is "free," but at a cost.
If you want a free credit report, the best place to obtain one is by going to the only site that was authorized by Congress in 2003, when the law was passed, which allows a consumer to get a free credit report once per year. The official site is www.annualcreditreport.com. This source will contain information compiled from the three major credit bureaus, Experian, Equifax and TransUnion.
